The Fifth Wheel Truck Stop, located in Grimsby, was part of a chain of restaurants throughout Canada and had been in business for 27 years. The Fifth Wheel truck stop also provided gasoline and offered motel service in the basement.
Approximately 25 staff worked at the Fifth wheel in earlier years, and towards the 1980’s approximately 100 staff were employed. September 20, 2015 was the last day of operations at the truck stop. At 3 PM the doors closed never to reopen.
Losani Homes purchased the land and plans to build residential and commercial properties. Today there is nothing left of the original truck stop.
I used to stop in here and go down to the beach, this was right next to a small beach, this was my favorite truck stop of all time very nice atmosphere. I bought a light down jacket here for 10 to 15 dollars canadian about 2014 it was an amazing price.
This was a regular stop back in the 80s and 90s. The Fifth Wheel truckstops were Ontario’s premier truckstops, starting with the original in Milton. There was one in Cornwall Ontario too. Always busy. Always with a “Professional Driver” section with fast service. My first real trucking job was a result of me posting an ad on the bulletin board at the Milton location back in 1975! My last visit to this location was in 2007. Always great food and friendly service. My first visit to the Cornwall location was in 76, with a White Western Star, with a plain unpadded cab, a 270 Cummins and a 15 speed. The other favourite stop on the Toronto – Montreal run was the 10 Acre in Belleville. While you were inside having a meal, an employee went down the lineup with a stepladder and window squeegee cleaning all the windshields. Those days are long gone. I’m glad I was trucking in the last days of real truckstops, where you could get a hearty fresh meal served by a cheerful waitress, and socialize with other drivers.
